World of Make Believe
Dave Gunning

The air was cool and clean, we burned the Devil’s blood
The fields had turned to green, we spread the poison out
And started up a war, dug ourselves in deep
There’s no profit in peace, no profit in peace
With honesty a problem, that kept us from the money
Showed us to ourselves, making us feel ugly
The writers held their mirrors, the stories couldn’t hide
So we labelled them a lie, we labelled them a lie

Words are turning in the wind
They’re meaningless and twisted
Pages have scattered on the sea
There’s money for the taking
The poorest ones are paying
Living in a world of make believe

The old boys bought the papers,
and the crooked politicians
Who lied about the good ones, spun it ‘round
and burned the bridges
Repeated all the slogans, drowning out the news
There’s no profit in truth, no profit in truth

We turned our backs on science,
doing our own research
We turned our backs on schools,
with no one left to teach us
Just playing and pretending that we’re big kids now
With even more to fight about,
with even more to fight about

Words are turning in the wind
They’re meaningless and twisted
Pages have scattered on the sea
There’s money for the taking
The poorest ones are paying
Living in a world of make believe

Can we build it again somehow
With empathy, enlisted
Find some hope underneath the greed
There’s darkness overtaking
The voice of reason fading
A criminal mistaken
For a hero in the waiting
Living in a world of make believe

Going Nowhere Tonight
Dave Gunning

I’m out in the backyard working with wood
Early in the morning and the weather is good
Lucky to be living with my heart this full
Gonna keep the fire burning tonight

I can see you inside through the frost in the window
Making those cookies with the jam in the middle
I’m feeling as fine as a Bick’s dill pickle
Never saw you looking so good

We’ll be alright if the world keeps turning
Look at the sky and the stars are burning
Everything changes by and by
But we’re going nowhere tonight
Going nowhere tonight

We’re doing different chores from one another
Had an afternoon beer break with your mother
The pile’s getting higher I’ll be finished by supper
Then I’ll start working on you

It’s Saturday night and we’re gonna stay home
Gonna keep the world out with the lights down low
And only a moonbeam to see where it goes
When I have you right here in my arms

We’ll be alright if the world keeps turning
Look at the sky and the stars are burning
Everything changes by and by
But we’re going nowhere tonight
Going nowhere tonight

All the lights of the town got nothing on you
You should see yourself the way I do
The whole world comes into view
When you’re the only one that I see

It’s the middle of the night and the fire’s still burning
And on the side of the wall, shadows converging
You’ve been teaching, I’ve been learning
I’ll put another log in the stove

We’ll be alright if the world keeps turning
Look at the sky and the stars are burning
Everything changes by and by
But we’re going nowhere tonight
We’re going nowhere tonight
Going nowhere tonight

Blue Heart
Dave Gunning, Rose Morrison

Blue heart
Trying to walk off this blue heart
Wasn’t thinking of this part
And your company

Sweet songs
I don’t think I can sing along
Can you say where I’ve gone wrong
To get this blue heart

If I could just hold you somewhere
Deep in the shadows
Lay you down in a boat on the river
And go where it flows
Or maybe I’ll just throw it back
And let it sink to the bottom
I’m sorry for wasting your time
I’ll be alright
With this blue heart
With this blue heart

God above
Never planned on this deep love
But you can never be sure of
What’s holding your mind

Now I’m gone
And it sure didn’t take long
Never said I was that strong
But you know it by now

If I could just hold you somewhere
Deep in the shadows
Lay you down in a boat on the river
And go where it flows
Or maybe I’ll just throw it back
And watch it sink to the bottom
I’m sorry for wasting your time
I’ll be alright
With this blue heart

Vincent Coleman
Dave Gunning, Bruce Guthro

On a cool December morning
1917
A man named Vincent Coleman
Arose to greet the day

He lit the fire, poured a coffee
Kissed his sleeping wife
Then Vincent Coleman went to work
For the last day of his life

Far away the war was a raging
There were guns and men to feed
Home Halifax was booming
Shipping goods by rail and sea

Vincent Coleman wired telegrams
Both up and down the line
With a pocket-watch there in his hand
He’d run those trains on time

Waterfront was waking
Harbour master made his rounds
The Mont Blanc cleared to port
She was weighted down
Two hundred tonnes of TNT
Benzol on her deck
She flew no cargo warning flag
The Captain held his breath

SS Imo was impatient
She was off to NYC
She was in the wrong shipping lane
Picking up some speed
A whistle blast was met by two
Neither ship would move

By the second time those blasts rang out
There was nothing they could do
There was nothing they could do

Wooooo

Was a grinding howl of steel on steel
Benzol hit the deck and split
A single spark to light the blaze
Then they all abandoned ship

Left her drifting for pier 6
People gathered for the view
But even those who heard the warning cries
Man, they didn’t have a clue

Somehow word got through to Coleman
That the cargo would explode
His partner said, “we have to run”
Then why we’ll never know
Call it courage call it duty
A hero or a fool
But Coleman said “go save yourself, I have a job to do”

It took but just a moment
To calm his shaking hands
Think of his wife and say a prayer
And then the job began“
Ammunition ship on fire
She’s likely to explode”
“Hold the trains” and “goodbye boys”
Were the last words that he wrote
The last words that he wrote

The gates of Hell blew open
The explosion filled the sky
Vincent looked up to the Heavens
There was nowhere he could hide

A ball of fire washed over him
Took Vincent’s life away
Hands were melted from his pocket watch
Glass all shattered from its face

There’s a ferry runs here everyday
Across the harbour of this town
She’s named the Vincent Coleman
And that makes me kind of proud

2000 souls died instantly
9000 more - were blinded or maimed
Hundreds more if Coleman’s hands
Hadn’t stopped that train

Wooooooo

Sunrise Trail
Mark Lang, Ron Sexsmith

Breathing slow through River John
Old pines rising before my eyes
Feeling low as I travel on
Hard times facing everything that’s gone

My heart grows heavy on the Sunrise Trail
And my lungs still burning from that old pulp mill
I’m leaving on the Sunrise Trail

The rearview mirror Pictou fades
Old Boat Harbour just a memory now
I could disappear on this road for days
Somedays it feels like I’m giving it all away

My heart grows heavy on the Sunrise Trail
And my lungs still burning from that old pulp mill
My heart grows heavy on the Sunrise Trail
And my lungs still burning from that old pulp mill
I’m leaving on the Sunrise Trail

Pursued by Grace
Dave Gunning, JP Cormier

Some people call me an unlucky man
Couldn’t follow the rules couldn’t stick to the plan
But each time I stumbled I was back in the race
Pursued by Grace

In a second chance, rundown local motel
Had some time to think of everything not going well
That’s when I saw her shadow on the wall
Her hand reached out to touch me
We danced down the hall

When I find myself sitting alone in the dark
Never thinking that I’d ever make it this far
Sometimes out of nowhere it hits you in the face
When you’re pursued by Grace

I was driving for days trying to outrun
The demons trying to catch me for the wrongs I had done
Then in the rearview I saw her wink and smile
So I pulled onto the shoulder and rested for awhile

When I find myself sitting alone in the dark
Never thinking that I’d ever make it this far
Sometimes a guardian angel takes the devil’s place
When you’re pursued by Grace

There’s a yellow field of stubble outside my window
And a feeling of trouble round my back door
But there’s no point in running anymore, take me with you
To the amber of the evening by the lantern’s glow

When I find myself sitting alone in the dark
Never thinking that I’d ever make it this far
You’re just about to fold and then you find another ace
When you’re pursued by Grace
You might see the reaper coming then he’s gone without a trace
When you’re pursued by Grace

Angels’ Share
Dave Gunning, Jamie Robinson

We watched the sun come up so many times before
Horizon burning gold in the dawn
We strummed our strings through the waking hours, calling out for more
Waiting for the night to turn back on
It seemed like the kind of days when fortune never failed
We were living off the interest of our youth
Every road comes to an end, sometimes it’s around a bend
And hits you right out of the blue

So tonight we gather ‘round to remember
Say a toast and raise our glasses in the air
Knowing somehow, someway we’re all together
And you are with us watching over as you drink
The angels’ share

We sang the Northwest Passage at the top of our lungs
No one sailed that old ship quite like you
You were steady on the water, always sticking to your guns
All for the captain and the crew
Then a crash of thunder closes in with something that you said
No one here is getting out alive
Olden glory, love lives on with heavy hearts we lift a song
To another star up in the sky

So tonight let’s gather ‘round to remember
Say a toast and raise our glasses in the air
Knowing somehow, someway we are all together
You are with us watching over as you drink
The angels’ share

And for all that has been taken
So much is left behind
Some comfort in the quiet and the dark
A bridge that keeps from keeping us apart

So tonight let’s gather ‘round to remember
Say a toast and raise our glasses in the air
Knowing somehow, someway we’re all together
You are with us watching over as you drink
You are with us watching over as you drink
The angels’ share

Raven’s Glen
Dave Gunning, George Krakat

There are things that I’ve done
Not knowing the reason
Was it the pull of the moon
A change in the season
Going out on the town
Getting out of my head
Running fast, burning hard and breaking down

The winds on the rise
Uprooted the trees
The roof started leaking
The sky fell on meI thought that you were leaving
No longer mine to hold
I’d felt the rain before but not this cold

Now the fields of Raven’s Glen
Cradle the orange sun
And the air’s so fresh again
Now that the storm is done
I ain’t going nowhere
I ain’t going nowhere without you

Everything had scattered
All around the lawn
There were shingles and branches
Some things just gone
But we worked around the clock
With our plaid shirts and boots
I was thinking that you never looked so good

Now the fields of Raven’s Glen
Cradle the orange sun
And the air’s so fresh again
Now that the storm is done
I ain’t going nowhere
I ain’t going nowhere without you

I’d trade it all for nothing
Cause nothing compares
To an evening of amber
The gold in your hair
All the hills are quiet now
Somehow we made it through
The distance to a better point of view

Now the fields of Raven’s Glen
Cradle the orange sun
And the air’s so fresh again
Now that the storm is done
I ain’t going nowhere
I ain’t going nowhere
I ain’t going nowhere without you

The Cost
Dave Gunning, Rose Morrison

In the end we’re but a spark
Nothing and the same
We’ve been through the thick of it
Making our own way
It’s been years of little breaks
Fighting off thieves
Watch as the others come in sweet innocence
Taking what they please

We’ve been holding on so dear
Can’t you feel it drawing near
The fear of the win gets lost
But this road comes at a cost

We fade awake in morning rain
That trickles to the ground
Through the leaves of summers past
Don’t we know that sound
It’s been years of give and take
Working up this soil
Watch as the spotlight dims on the page
We still find our voice

We’ve been holding on so dear
Can’t you feel it drawing near
The fear of the win gets lost
But this road comes at a cost
The fear of the win gets lost
But this road comes at a cost

She is the Swan
Dave Gunning, Rose Morrison

The valley of song
Leave reasoning mind
Trust in the dawn
Trust in the dawn

In the forest of words
Hearing the truth
Where a black river runs
Where a black river runs

A visible line
True mystery of all
She is the swan
She is the swan

The stubble of autumn
The harvest was good
Long shadows fall
Long shadows fall

Nights growing cold
Sunsets of gold
Don’t let her go
Don’t let her go

A visible line
True mystery of all
She is the swan
She is the swan

The darkness breaks silent
Just like a heart
The winds are dying down
The winds are dying down
The ocean rose higher
Than ever before
We were standing on shore
We were standing on shore

A visible line
True mystery of all
She is the swan
She is the swan
A visible line
True mystery of all
She is the swan
She is the swan
She is the swan
