Field Notes was recorded outside under a gumtree in the small Australian coastal village of Point Lonsdale.
Within a magical window of sunlit winter days, Dave Gunning got to the heart of what he does.

Beloved Canadian troubadour Dave Gunning was invited to Australia by acclaimed songwriters and producers Mark Lang & Nick Huggins to find a fresh way into his recorded work.
Collecting field notes over the last four years Dave uncovered a group of songs that celebrate the great love of his life, the frailty of the human heart and the state of the world.
"Over the years I've had the pleasure of touring Australia and getting to know this beautiful country. There's kindness mixed with refreshing honesty which is about the perfect way to describe my friend Mark Lang, who also happens to be one of my favourite artists. Producers Mark Lang and Nick Higgins created a world for me to walk into, relax, and sing the songs. There was a natural flow to the entire process and undeniable magic around the sessions.
Having the guys on my side allowed me the confidence to let go and flow with the river. There is rawness and honesty on this recording that I couldn't have reached otherwise. In a crazy, upside-down world I had to travel to the other side of the globe to get myself upright again."

With over two decades on the road, Nova Scotia's Dave Gunning has earned a reputation as one of Canada's most engaging and respected folk singer-songwriters. A multiple East Coast Music Award and Canadian Folk Music Award winner, he's known for his warm stage presence, razor-sharp wit, and songs that celebrate everyday heroes and hard truths. Gunning has shared the stage with legends like Ron Hynes, Rita MacNeil, and Matt Andersen, and remains deeply rooted in his home community of Pictou County. In June 2025, he travelled to Point Lonsdale, Australia to record Field Notes, his fifteenth studio album, a stripped-back and emotionally rich collection that gets to the heart of what he does best.
