Chart Chat: You gotta Lovett!
Partially because of special seasonal programming that comes into play for stretches of December, and partially because we issue our year-end chart that month, the January Galaxie FolkRoots chart consolidates total high rotation airplay for both December 2009 and January 2010. Over this period, top nods go to Lyle Lovett’s latest release Natural Forces (Lost Highway) on the International chart, and Dave Gunning’s We’re All Leaving for the Canadian list.
One of Lovett’s relatively quieter productions (as opposed to the “and his Large Band” releases), the Texas troubadour writes only a handful of the tunes, choosing elegant covers of Vince Bell and Townes, among others. But the pair of those he does pen are among his best, and Galaxie listeners have been hearing a lot of the forceful title track and the melancholy “Empty Blue Shoes”. As the album title evokes, Gunning’s new disc is largely a song cycle chronicling the death of small East Coast towns and a generation displaced westward in search of a livelihood. Co-writes with the likes of James Keelaghan, Rose Cousins, and David Francey add some spice to Dave’s always perceptive tunesmithing.
And now, without further ado, back to our regularly scheduled programming:
