Chart Chat: You gotta Lovett!

Partially because of special seasonal programming that comes into play for stretches of December, and partially because we issue our year-end chart that month, the January Galaxie FolkRoots chart consolidates total high rotation airplay for both December 2009 and January 2010. Over this period, top nods go to Lyle Lovett’s latest release Natural Forces (Lost Highway) on the International chart, and Dave Gunning’s We’re All Leaving for the Canadian list.

One of Lovett’s relatively quieter productions (as opposed to the “and his Large Band” releases), the Texas troubadour writes only a handful of the tunes, choosing elegant covers of Vince Bell and Townes, among others. But the pair of those he does pen are among his best, and Galaxie listeners have been hearing a lot of the forceful title track and the melancholy “Empty Blue Shoes”. As the album title evokes, Gunning’s new disc is largely a song cycle chronicling the death of small East Coast towns and a generation displaced westward in search of a livelihood. Co-writes with the likes of James Keelaghan, Rose Cousins, and David Francey add some spice to Dave’s always perceptive tunesmithing.

And now, without further ado, back to our regularly scheduled programming:

Hard Workin’ Hands Tour

ronhynes_davegunningTwo-time 2008 ECMA award winner, Dave Gunning and Canadian songwriting icon, Ron Hynes, ride the musical journey on their “Hard Workin’ Hands” tour.

Inspired by Ron, it all began one night in a downtown Halifax bar when he approached Dave to write with him. Hynes wrote “Take a look at these “hard workin’ hands” on a napkin and shoved it at Gunning, saying, “Who is this guy? Write a song about him”. That line eventually turned into “Hard Workin’ Hands”, a signature co-write and duet on Dave’s latest release, “House For Sale”.

Their co-write, “Hard Workin’ Hands” was recently named First Place Winner in the folk category in the 2008 Indie International Songwriting Contest.

“Hard Workin’ Hands” extols the virtues of hard work while also maintaining a sense of self when the work day ends, which is mirrored by Gunning’s youthful voice matched to the wiser one of Dr. Ron Hynes.” EXCLAIM! Magazine

With a songwriting career that spans more than 35 years, Ron Hynes is a six-time East Coast Music Award winner, a Genie Award winner and a past Juno, CCMA and Canadian Folk Music Awards nominee. Ron’s latest recording, simply titled “Ron Hynes”, is a stirring collection of soul-baring and personal songs that have earned him numerous accolades, nominations and awards including the 2007 ECMA Male Solo Recording of the Year and the 2006 MusicNL Awards for Songwriter of the Year, Folk-Roots Artist of the Year, and Entertainer of The Year.
